In a landmark ruling that is set to reverberate across the artificial intelligence, publishing and copyright industries, Meta Platforms Inc has secured a major legal victory. The United States District Court for the Northern District of California dismissed the core copyright infringement claims brought by a group of authors who alleged that Meta unlawfully used their books to train its large language models, known as Llama. The lawsuit was brought by thirteen authors including high-profile names such as Sarah Silverman and Junot Díaz and revolved around allegations that Meta infringed their copyrights by training Llama on datasets that included unauthorized digital copies of their works.
