Hard disk storage to remain suitable for data centers in 2026 & beyond, says Western Digital
NEW DELHI: Storage solutions maker Western Digital said that hard disk drives (HDDs) will remain relevant for various applications inside artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in India, compared to newer alternatives such as NAND flash-based solid-state drives (SSDs).
“Inside the data center, market research has shown that 80% of the storage is still on HDD. Flash (or SSD) has a relatively higher TCO. On the contrary, HDDs’ lower TCOs allow extending capacity at scale. So, I do not expect to see much of a change in the near future,” Owais Mohammed, sales director (India, Middle East, and Africa) at Western Digital, told ETTelecom.
