Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian revealed that Google-parent Alphabet was well aware of artificial intelligence’s (AI) energy demands since a long time. He said that the tech giant was among the first to realise that the immense electricity needs of AI computing would become the “most problematic” infrastructure bottleneck. Speaking at the recently held Fortune Brainstorm AI event in San Francisco, Kurian explained that Google Cloud, a significant player in the AI infrastructure landscape, took a long-term view of this challenge, prompting the company to plan how to source and use energy efficiently actively. He also highlighted that Google has been working on AI for a long time, well before the emergence of large language models, allowing them to anticipate and prepare for these energy constraints.
