Meta agrees give ‘data sharing choice’ to Facebook and Instagram users in Europe
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has committed to providing users of Facebook and Instagram across the European Union (EU) with a choice of sharing their data for personalised advertising, the European Commission announced on Monday (December 8). The move, which aims to settle a legal dispute over the company’s controversial “pay or consent” subscription model, is a direct response to the EU’s landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA) under which the social media giant was fined €200 million ($233 million).
“The European Commission acknowledges Meta’s undertaking to offer users in the EU an alternative choice of Facebook and Instagram services that would show them less personalised ads, to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
