The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released a comprehensive set of new security guidelines for all satellite communication providers operating under the Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite Services (GMPCS) license. These updated regulations introduce over 20 new security conditions that service providers must comply with.

Key mandates in the revised guidelines include provisions on data localization, real-time traffic monitoring, registration of user terminals, geo-fencing and mandatory integration with India’s indigenous NavIC positioning system (an alternative to GPS) by 2029. The DoT has also accounted for advancements in satellite technologies, such as inter-satellite communication links and support for mobile services, in addition to traditional fixed satellite offerings.
