Breaching Digital Markets Act

On April 23, 2025, the European Commission announced its first formal enforcement actions under the newly implemented Digital Markets Act (DMA), issuing non-compliance decisions against two of the world’s largest tech firms – Apple and Meta. As part of these decisions, Apple has been fined 500 million euros and Meta 200 million euros for violations of specific obligations enshrined in the DMA.
The Commission’s investigation, which began on March 25, 2024, focused on Apple’s steering restrictions within the App Store and Meta’s “Consent or Pay” advertising model on Facebook and Instagram. Both companies had been designated as gatekeepers under the DMA and were subject to obligations that became legally binding in March 2024.
