Smart TV Anticompetitive Probe

On April 21, 2025, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved a settlement proposal by Google LLC, marking a significant conclusion to a multi-year antitrust inquiry into the tech giant’s conduct in India’s smart TV operating system market. The order was passed under the newly introduced settlement framework of the Competition Act, 2002, following Google’s offer to modify some of its commercial practices. However, the approval did not come unanimously: a forceful dissenting opinion by Member Anil Agrawal raised fundamental concerns about the sufficiency of the remedy and the continued existence of the very agreements that the DG had found problematic.
