OpenAI joins Facebook-parent Meta, Anthropic in hiring former UK politician

OpenAI has become the latest tech giant to hire a high-ranking former politician to its executive suite. The ChatGPT creator has roped in George Osborne, the UK’s former Chancellor of the Exchequer, to lead the international expansion of its infrastructure projects. The hiring comes as the race for global AI dominance hots up and tech companies are spending a fortune to recruit engineers and researchers.

Osborne confirmed his new role in a post on X (Twitter). He will serve as managing director and head of OpenAI for countries, and oversee partnerships with countries to develop massive data centres and energy infrastructure.
