Microsoft Research unveils Project Gecko to build multilingual AI systems

Microsoft Research has launched Project Gecko, a new global initiative aimed at bridging the language and cultural gaps that currently hinder generative AI systems from serving the majority of the world’s population. The initiative focuses on creating cost-effective, adaptable AI that leverages local languages and cultural contexts.

According to the company, Project Gecko addresses the problem that many global communities are underrepresented in the data used to train large AI models, causing these tools to struggle with local languages and fail to provide relevant expertise.
