Google is going after managers; cutting leadership roles in its billion-dollar ad team

Google is flattening its management structure in one of its most profitable divisions, eliminating an entire layer of middle managers in its US advertising sales unit, according to an internal memo obtained by Business Insider. The restructuring affects the Google Customer Solutions (GCS) division, which serves midsize advertisers and manages what Vice President John Nicoletti described as “a portfolio the size of a Fortune 100 company.” Set to take effect in January, the changes will remove the “Managers of Managers” layer across several teams, with affected employees transitioning to other roles rather than facing layoffs.
