India taking multi-step approach for innovation, regulation in telecom: Scindia

India is taking a multi-step approach to balance innovation and regulation in the telecom sector, according to union telecom and IT minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, Scindia said, “The four steps of India’s efforts towards balancing innovation with regulation include spectrum management; ensuring market stability; introducing telecom regulation to ease up various processes; and bringing cybersecurity measures for consumer protection.”

According to a Ministry of Communications statement released on Wednesday, he further said that innovation, inclusivity, sustainability, and trust form the core of India’s guiding principles towards tech governance, while remarking that public-focused services such as Aadhaar and BharatNet have been successful and serve every citizen of the country today.

As part of the visit to the mega telecom conference, Scindia met with top industry executives from vendors and technology companies including Qualcomm, Cisco, Mavenir, Ericsson, Nokia, AMD, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), Telecom Equipment & Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC), among others, enabling strategic partnerships in the sector, as per the ministry.

The union minister also held bilateral meetings with the US telecoms regulator, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and visited booths of companies exploring developments in fifth-generation (5G) technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and next-generation mobile technologies.

During his visit, Scindia also showcased India’s rapid 5G rollout, the world’s lowest data tariffs, indigenous 4G and 5G stacks and robust cybersecurity measures.

RCR Wireless separately reported, citing Scindia, that India aims to become a global leader in sixth-generation or 6G technology.

During a presentation, he also highlighted that India’s 4G technology stack is now ready for export, as per the media report.
