Seeking the right model: What’s keeping India from building its own LLMs

Spurred by the launch of Chinese-made foundational model DeepSeek, reportedly built with a few million dollars and outdated GPUs, the Indian government called for proposals to build an Indian foundational model capturing the country’s languages, supported by grants in the form of compute credits, equity investments and co-financing options.
