Elon Musk’s X ordered to pay $1.44 million by Brazil court
Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter) has been ordered to pay 8.1 million Brazilian reais ($1.4 million) in fines for failing to comply with judicial orders, according to a ruling by Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. As per an AP report, the ruling stated that X refused to provide registration data for a profile linked to Allan dos Santos, a Bolsonaro ally accused of spreading falsehoods.
In July last year, De Moraes had directed X and Meta to block the account and submit the requested data. While X complied with the account ban, it argued that it couldn’t provide the data, claiming the user had “no technical connection point with Brazil.” De Moraes dismissed the argument and, in August, imposed a daily fine of 100,000 Brazilian reais ($17,500) for noncompliance. By October, the total penalty had reached 8.1 million reais.
