The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is facing a tug-of-war between telecom operators and the tech industry as it seeks to tighten regulations against spam and online scams. At a recent open house discussion, telecom operators advocated for bringing OTT platforms and businesses under stricter regulatory oversight, arguing that these entities often contribute significantly to spam but escape accountability.
However, the Broadband India Forum (BIF), representing tech companies, countered that OTT platforms are already regulated under the Information Technology Act and additional oversight by TRAI is unnecessary.
