US new law
The United States (US) has passed a law which would require Chinese owner ByteDance to divest TikTok’s US operations in about nine months or face a ban. The Bill was passed by the US House of Representatives which has been driven by the concerns that China could access Americans’ data or surveil them with the app. The US Senate passed the Bill with a huge margin of 79 in favour and 18 against which was signed by President Joe Biden on April 24, 2024. The legislation gives ByteDance 270 days to divest TikTok with a possible three-month extension.
