Finance minister’s ‘UPI charge only for merchants’ claim rests on ‘five dubious claims’, says Congress
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Friday said that Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s defence of the proposed changes to the law governing UPI payments rested on “five dubious claims” and insisted that the amendment weakens statutory protection for India’s flagship digital payments system.
The fresh salvo came after Sitharaman accused Ramesh of “spreading a canard” over the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which proposes changes to Section 10A of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.
