Why the US restricted & then restored Anthropic’s most powerful AI models

The US Commerce Department has lifted the export controls that had forced Anthropic to switch off its two most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models — Fable 5 and Mythos 5 — for every user worldwide, including in India, the company said on Tuesday.

The reversal caps an episode that began on June 12, when the Trump administration ordered Anthropic to deny the models to all foreign nationals on national security grounds.
