Layoffs at US tech companies crossed 140,000 in the first six months of 2026; of these Amazon, Oracle, Meta and Microsoft account for almost 50,000
US technology companies have laid off nearly 140,000 employees during the first half of 2026, signaling that corporate layoffs across Silicon Valley remain in full swing even as industry giants pour unprecedented billions into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. An analysis by the Financial Times of corporate filings and data from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas reveals that tech sector cutbacks accounted for more than one-third of all announced US layoffs during this period.
Notably, industry giants Amazon, Oracle, Meta and Microsoft accounted for nearly 50,000 of those job cuts, which represents approximately 6% of their combined corporate workforces.
