DoT, MeitY issue directives to OTT apps to implement SIM binding, Centre informs SC: Report

NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) have informed the Supreme Court that they have issued directions to over-the-top (OTT) communications applications, including WhatsApp, to implement SIM binding to bolster efforts for curbing digital arrest scams, according to a Bar and Bench report published on Tuesday.

This was part of the Central government’s statement, in its status report filed in suo motu case initiated by the apex court in October 2025, to address the menace of digital arrest scams nationwide.
