Why Apple picked Google Gemini over OpenAI’s ChatGPT to power Siri

Apple’s decision to partner with Google for its Siri overhaul came down to a simple calculation: Gemini closed the gap with competitors and offered better terms. The multi-year deal, confirmed this week, will see Google’s AI models power the next generation of Apple Intelligence features, leaving OpenAI on the sidelines despite its early integration with Apple devices.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, OpenAI hadn’t actually been in serious contention for a while. The iPhone maker tested Gemini, ChatGPT, and Anthropic’s Claude before zeroing in on Google earlier this year.
