Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea suggest higher deterrence charges to curb spam

NEW DELHI: India’s leading telcos, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have recommended that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) treat person-to-person (P2P) and application-to-person (A2P) communications traffic separately, and levy higher charges on bulk SMS and calls to curb the menace of spam.

This, they argued, is necessary since the present interconnection regime does not differentiate between personal calls and bulk commercial calls, making spam cheap, scalable, and difficult to control.
