Google is retiring its free Dark Web monitoring tool. In a support page, Google announced that it is discontinuing the “Dark Web report” tool. Since the past two years, the tool has been available for free to all Gmail users. Google’s ‘Dark Web tool’ feature worked by scanning users’ email addresses to determine whether they had appeared in data breaches, which often circulate on Dark Web marketplaces. The tool then alerted users about where the data that was exposed in the breach, including any accompanying details such as date of birth, addresses, and phone numbers.

Google, however, says that the tool has not been helpful enough. “While the report offered general information, feedback showed that it didn’t provide helpful next steps,” says the company on its support page.
