Government panel wants Google and OpenAI to pay content creators for AI training use

The government has proposed a shift in AI regulation, recommending that AI companies like Google and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI be required to pay content creators a share of revenue for using their work that has been used to train models. This proposal can be seen as a potential setback for the tech giants that have advocated for free access to publicly available data, a report has said. The proposal has been filed by a panel that was established in April.

According to a report by news agency Reuters, the panel released a report on Monday (December 8) suggesting that while AI firms should be able to access Indian content for training, they must pay royalties into a central body representing copyright holders.
