Investigate Facebook, Instagram and if… : US senators write letter to FTC and SEC chiefs on scam ads, Meta responds
US Senators Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal have written a letter to the heads of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), demanding an immediate investigation into scam ads on Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram, a report has said. News agency Reuters recently reported that the social media giant allegedly earns billions in revenue from running ads on these platforms that promote scams and illicit activities.
In a joint letter to the federal agencies, the bipartisan pair stated, “The FTC and SEC should immediately open investigations and, if the reporting is accurate, pursue vigorous enforcement action where appropriate” to compel Meta to disgorge profits, pay penalties, and agree to cease running such advertisements.
