Google, Facebook parent Meta’s Red Sea Cables facing delay: What is making deployment ‘dangerous’

Major subsea internet cable projects backed by tech giants Google and Meta Platforms are facing deployment delays in the Red Sea, as report has said, noting that heightened political tensions and security threats have made the crucial route dangerous for commercial vessel operations. The delays affect key global infrastructure intended to supply high-speed internet to Africa and Asia, throttling connectivity for these regions.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Meta Platforms’ ambitious 45,000-kilometre 2Africa cable system, planned since 2020 to loop around the African continent, remains unfinished in its southern Red Sea segment five years later.
