E-commerce to gig economy: New GDP series to reflect today’s reality

NEW DELHI: The new GDP series, which is due to be released early next year, is expected to have more elaborate data on services, including the digital economy, as well as unincorporated enterprises.

Since the last series, there has been a surge in the digital economy with e-commerce coming up in a big way along with aggregators that capture the economic activity of the gig economy in a much more organised fashion. Besides, data from some of the platforms are also expected to provide proxy information that can be extrapolated for some of the activities in the unorganised sector, officials told TOI.
