Amazon has agreed to pay $2.5 billion to resolve a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) lawsuit that accused the company of misleading customers into signing up for Prime memberships and making cancellations unnecessarily difficult.
Under the settlement announced on Thursday, September 25, the Seattle-based retailer will pay a $1 billion civil penalty and provide $1.5 billion in refunds to affected consumers. The case, filed in June 2023 during the Biden administration under FTC Chair Lina Khan, centered on the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act of 2010.
