Facebook’s former chief security officer, Alex Stamos, has advised parents to delay giving their children a smartphone until they can handle the responsibility. In a recent interview on the “Tosh Show” podcast, Stamos, who also worked as a security expert for Yahoo, stated his philosophy is “trust but verify.” In a follow-up email to Business Insider, he even outlined a series of rules he follows with his own children to manage their internet access. Stamos noted that his 13-year-old daughter now has a phone, but he believes it is up to each parent to decide when to give their child a device. He recommends restricting tablets like the iPad to only approved apps and not allowing a web browser until a child is older.
