‘Nutrition Labels’

The US Federal Communications Commission has asked Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to display labels (termed as “Nutrition Labels”) with the key ingredients of their plans, similar to the nutrition label format on food products.

The labels are intended to help consumers comparison shop for the internet service plan that will best meet their needs and budget. These labels will give accurate information about broadband prices, introductory rates, data allowances and broadband speeds and links to find out about any available discounts or service bundles to consumers in the United States. Links to network management practices and privacy policies should be listed as well. The labels should appear both online and at physical stores.

In addition to creating a unique label for each service plan offered, providers must also make the information in the labels machine-readable to enable third parties to more easily collect and aggregate data for the purpose of creating comparison
