The government is all set to launch a scheme for design-led manufacturing to build a strong ecosystem for 5G as part of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, said finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech. The minister also said the required 5G spectrum auctions will be conducted in 2022.

The corpus for the telecom equipment PLI is Rs 12,951 cr but the government expects to offer incentives worth only around Rs 7,400 cr, leaving surplus funds. The telecom department had approved 31 proposals under the telecom equipment PLI scheme, entailing investments of Rs 3,345 cr over four-and-a-half years.
