In other words, this is not merely a trade agreement; it is a new blueprint for shared prosperity,” said PM Modi.

Leyen said in a statement, “The EU and India make history today, deepening the partnership between the world’s biggest democracies. We have created a free trade zone of 2 billion people, with both sides set to gain economically. We have sent a signal to the world that rules-based cooperation still delivers great outcomes. We will build on this success and grow our relationship to be even stronger.”

With a combined market estimated at over ₹2,091.6 lakh crore (or $24 trillion), the FTA unlocks vast opportunities for the 2-billion citizens of India and the EU, according to India’s Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

The FTA delivers “unprecedented market access for more than 99% of India’s exports by trade value”, while preserving policy space for sensitive sectors and reinforcing India’s developmental priorities, the ministry said in an official statement.

“The FTA unlocks opportunities to scale India’s presence in Europe’s high-value markets, while long-term, predictable access fuels partnerships with European manufacturers in steel, electronics, automotive, and renewable energy,” it added.

Under the FTA, broader and deeper commitments have been secured from the EU across 144 services subsectors, including IT/ITeS, professional services, education, and other business services, while India offered access to 102 subsectors, covering the bloc’s priorities such as professional, business, telecoms, maritime, financial, and environmental services.

In India, the deal will need approval from the Union Cabinet.

On the EU side, the Commission will put forward its proposal to the Council for the signature and conclusion of the agreement. Once adopted by the Council, the EU and India can sign the agreements. Following the signature, the agreement requires the European Parliament’s consent and the Council’s decision on the conclusion for it to enter into force.

These approvals can take time, with the agreement to be signed later this year, and it is expected to come into force from 2027 onwards.

The announcement of the free-trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU) opens opportunities for Indian companies, including Bharti Airtel, to invest in the digital infrastructure in Europe, said Sunil Mittal, founder & chairman of Bharti Enterprises. “I am confident that this FTA will open new avenues for collaboration, particularly in digital infrastructure, space connectivity, and secure networks, offering European investors a compelling opportunity to innovate and scale with India for global markets,” Mittal said in a statement on Tuesday. “This agreement also opens opportunities for Indian companies like Airtel to invest in the digital infrastructure in Europe,” […]

[8

post-988364","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-telecom
["GET
