{"id":975164,"date":"2025-11-19T17:28:36","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T11:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/telecomlive.in\/web\/?p=975164"},"modified":"2025-11-20T08:01:35","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T02:31:35","slug":"trai-mandates-bfsi-sector-entities-to-adopt-1600-numbering-series-by-early-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/telecomlive.in\/web\/2025\/11\/19\/trai-mandates-bfsi-sector-entities-to-adopt-1600-numbering-series-by-early-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"TRAI mandates BFSI sector entities to adopt \u20181600\u2019 numbering series by early 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Entities regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), and the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) have been mandated to adopt the \u201c1600\u201d numbering series in a staggered manner by March 2026, as per the telecom regulator\u2019s latest directive released on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in an official statement, said that the direction has been issued to enhance consumer trust, curb spam, and prevent fraudulent activities perpetrated through voice calls.<\/p>\n<p>SEBI-regulated entities such as mutual funds (MFs) and asset management companies (AMCs) have to adopt the numbering series by February 15, and qualified stockbrokers by March 15. <\/p>\n<p>The telecom watchdog suggested that, for the time being, other SEBI-registered intermediaries may voluntarily migrate to the 1600-series after verification of their registration details. <\/p>\n<p>RBI-regulated entities such as commercial banks, large NBFCs, and remaining NBFCs have to onboard by January 1, February 1, and March 1, respectively. <\/p>\n<p>Lastly, PFRDA-regulated entities, including Central Recordkeeping Agencies (CRAs) and pension fund managers, have to onboard by February 15.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe matter of mandating last date for adoption of 1600 series by the entities in the insurance sector is under discussion with IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India), and will be notified subsequently,\u201d TRAI said. <\/p>\n<p>In response to TRAI\u2019s regulatory initiative, the \u20181600\u2019 numbering series has been assigned by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for allocation to entities in the BFSI sector, and government organisations to clearly distinguish their service and transactional calls from other commercial communications. <\/p>\n<p>As per the regulator, about 485 entities have already adopted the \u20181600\u2019 series, subscribing to a total of over 2,800 numbers. <\/p>\n<p>TRAI said it was now appropriate to mandate time-bound completion of the exercise to ensure that entities continuing to use standard 10-digit numbers for service and transactional calls also shift to 1600 series numbers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Entities regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), and the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) have been mandated to adopt the \u201c1600\u201d numbering series in a staggered manner by March 2026, as per the telecom regulator\u2019s latest directive released on Wednesday.
