The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a strategic transformation in the telecom industry, shifting it from being an infrastructure provider to an orchestrator of intelligent digital ecosystems.<\/p>\n
According to experts, AI is turning networks into adaptive platforms capable of sensing, deciding, and acting autonomously and the biggest AI opportunity for telcos lies in automation. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhile 5G has enhanced the mobile experience, it hasn\u2019t yet translated into major financial gains for operators. AI now offers a path to significantly reduce costs and strengthen profitability, with adoption spanning the entire value chain \u2014 from network planning and monitoring to management, marketing, and customer care,\u201d says Marc Einstein from Counterpoint Research.
\nTelecom has long been synonymous with connectivity. However, with AI, things will change dramatically. <\/p>\n
Globally, telecom operators are already deploying AI to create proactive networks that predict and resolve issues before they affect users, says Purushothaman KG, Sector Head \u2013 Telecommunications, KPMG in India.<\/p>\n
While there\u2019s plenty of buzz, AI\u2019s impact is very real \u2014 it\u2019s reshaping business models, improving decision-making, and creating measurable value across nearly every industry. Specifically in telecom, global players have already started implementing it.<\/p>\n
For instance, Japan\u2019s Rakuten Mobile is the world\u2019s first AI-native telecom operator, having integrated AI into its operations from day one. As a result, it manages its entire network with roughly 100 people \u2014 a task that typically requires thousands when done manually by competitors. Similarly, in Saudi Arabia, telecom operators are leveraging AI to dynamically manage network capacity and coverage during large-scale events like the Hajj pilgrimage, which draws millions of visitors each year. <\/p>\n
The boom in AI adoption has positioned telecom at the center of schemes, and it will lead to the emergence of more fifth-generation (5G) services. \u201cTelecom will come back into an even more important role in day-to-day functions to make AI work seamlessly. Telecom will be at the center of it,\u201d Randeep Sekhon, chief technology officer (CTO), Bharti Airtel, said recently at ETTelecom\u2019s 5G Innovation Summit.<\/p>\n
Arvind Nevatia, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Vi Business, also said in a recent interview with ETTelecom that AI is no longer a distant vision of the future, it is a present reality as it is actively redefining how enterprises design, deliver, and manage solutions, enabling smarter operations, faster decision-making, and more personalized experiences.
\nIn the telecom space, AI is being implemented across the entire value chain from network planning, to network monitoring management, marketing and customer care. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere are also opportunities for new revenue streams and we are seeing some of the more innovative telcos like SK Telecom and DT offer new services to customers such as personal digital assistants but the focus for now is still largely on automation,\u201d Einstein adds.<\/p>\n
In theory, an AI-native telecom network will deliver superior quality, personalization, and security while operating at much lower costs, experts say. <\/p>\n
