{"id":964352,"date":"2025-09-25T17:48:41","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T12:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/telecomlive.in\/web\/?p=964352"},"modified":"2025-09-25T20:42:31","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T15:12:31","slug":"road-safety-tech-majors-seek-delicensing-of-30mhz-in-5-9ghz-band-for-5g-led-v2v-deployments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/telecomlive.in\/web\/2025\/09\/25\/road-safety-tech-majors-seek-delicensing-of-30mhz-in-5-9ghz-band-for-5g-led-v2v-deployments\/","title":{"rendered":"Road safety: Tech majors seek delicensing of 30MHz in 5.9GHz band for 5G-led V2V deployments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multinational technology companies and chipset vendors have sought the Centre\u2019s urgent intervention to delicense 30MHz in the 5.9GHz band, which will pave the way for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, and help reduce road fatalities.  <\/p>\n<p>This will be achieved by, say, a Toyota car&#8217;s onboard unit (OBU) communicating with a Maruti Suzuki car&#8217;s OBU, via fifth-generation (or 5G) network to transmit data such as speed, direction, braking status, and position, in real-time, enabling drivers and vehicles to \u201csee\u201d dangers and obstacles in real-time, well before they come into direct line of sight. <\/p>\n<p>This comes in the wake of leading four-wheeler and two-wheeler OEMs \u2013 including JSW MG Motor India, Tata Motors, Mahindra &#038; Mahindra, TVS Motor, and Hero MotorCorp \u2013 equipping their vehicles with an OBU to enable the Internet of Things (IoT) and other smart technologies. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timely delicensing of the 30 MHz spectrum band in the 5875\u20135905 MHz range will open a clear pathway for industry stakeholders, including automobile manufacturers, technology developers, and researchers, to introduce and scale V2V-based safety solutions,\u201d TV Ramachandran, president, Broadband India Forum (BIF), said in a letter to Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. <\/p>\n<p>ETTelecom has reviewed a copy of the letter dated September 22, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>BIF\u2019s members include telecom incumbents Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, US chipmaker Qualcomm, Google, Meta, Amazon, Hughes, Intel, and others. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a precedent in the ministry to delicense frequency bands without seeking the explicit recommendations of TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India),\u201d he said. \u201cReferring the matter to TRAI at this stage is likely to introduce significant delays, as TRAI typically undertakes an exhaustive consultation process before arriving at a decision,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>BIF cited a study from the Save Life Foundation, which found that 1.68 lakh people were killed, and 4.43 lakh were injured in 4.61 lakh road crashes in India in 2022. <\/p>\n<p>The industry association, while citing a separate joint report by DIMTS and TRIPP\u2013IIT Delhi, said that the financial burden of road accidents has been estimated at 3.14% of the nation\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP). <\/p>\n<p>As per the Delhi-based association, several countries globally have already implemented or are in the process of rolling out V2V technologies as an integral part of their vision for safer and smarter mobility. <\/p>\n<p>In October 2023, an inter-ministerial task force established by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), chaired by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), had conducted a broad consultation with relevant stakeholders. <\/p>\n<p>BIF noted that the DoT\u2019s Wireless Planning Commission (WPC) has subsequently recommended that delicensing 30MHz in the 5875-5925MHz range for OBUs towards V2V deployment; and consider licensing conditions for V2I (Vehicle-to-Infra) connectivity since the infrastructure will be required to be managed by various authorities at national (NHAI), state, district, and municipality levels. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sincerely support considering V2I through the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) process since licensing is involved, but for V2V, the spectrum band should be delicensed immediately,\u201d Ramachandran said, adding that as the usage is in line with existing as well as revised National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP), the telecom department could immediately issue a gazette notification for rules of usage of this spectrum for OBUs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Multinational technology companies and chipset vendors have sought the Centre\u2019s urgent intervention to delicense 30MHz in the 5.9GHz band, which will pave the way for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, and help reduce road fatalities.
