Taiwan’s export orders rose in May as demand for the island’s technology products – artificial intelligence in particular – surged, and companies frontloaded business to escape looming U.S. tariffs.<\/p>\n
Export orders rose 18.5% year on year in May to $57.93 billion for a fourth consecutive monthly gain, the ministry of economic affairs said on Friday, in line with analysts’ expectations of an increase of 18.9%.<\/p>\n
Orders for goods from Taiwan, home to the world’s largest contract chipmaker TSMC and other tech companies, are considered a bellwether of global technology demand. <\/p>\n
Trade-dependent Taiwan’s export performance this year could be affected if US President Donald Trump follows through with his tariff plans.<\/p>\n
Trump had floated the possibility of imposing tariffs as high as 32% on US imports from Taiwan, a worldwide hub for semiconductors. In April, he paused tariffs for 90 days to allow for talks to take place. <\/p>\n
“Looking ahead, uncertainties such as trade policies and geopolitical risks continue to disrupt the momentum of global economic and trade growth,” the ministry said in a statement, adding it saw order momentum being supported by AI and high-performance computing.<\/p>\n
For June, the ministry said it expected export orders to jump between 16.3% and 20.7% on the year.<\/p>\n
Taiwan’s orders in May for telecoms products were up 29.5% on the year, while those for electronic products gained 27.7% <\/p>\n
Overall orders from China were down 2.4%, versus a rise of 5.7% in April. <\/p>\n
Orders from the United States soared 40.1%, after a gain of 30.3% the prior month. <\/p>\n
