Taiwanese fabless chipmaker MediaTek said beyond smartphone chipsets, it sees business growth potential in the lucrative Internet of Things (IoT) and automotive segments. <\/p>\n
\u201cMore than 50% of our revenues is from smartphones. But automotive is one thing which is coming up along with IoT. People are excited about AI, and I think that it is also coming into IoT solutions,\u201d Anku Jain, managing director of MediaTek India, told ETTelecom in an interview.<\/p>\n
Jain said the company aims to grow across all segments \u2013 from smartphones to automotive and IoT. \u201cAutomotive and IoT are very important. I think they could become our growth engines in the future. Automotive is just starting. But the next few years will be big for us.\u201d <\/p>\n
He said vehicles such as Tata Punch EV and Skoda Slavia come equipped with MediaTek\u2019s multimedia interface, while the company has a tie-up with JioThings for smart clusters in two-wheelers, including the Kinetic Green Flex and Kinetic Green E-Luna.<\/p>\n
\u201cGlobally, we also have security, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and such things, which are important, and the capability to support up to 16 screens in the car. We think that such trends are going to become more commonplace going forward,\u201d Jain said. \u201cWe have the technology available, and we will have huge growth in the coming months and years.\u201d <\/p>\n
Its American rival, Qualcomm, also aims to diversify and ramp up its business in the lucrative automotive industry.<\/p>\n
Qualcomm India president Savi Soin separately told ETTelecom in a recent interview that the company is performing \u201cgreat\u201d in the auto sector, and is excited about the two-wheelers market and the smart cluster opportunity. <\/p>\n
Smartphone segment dominance with AI<\/p>\n
Citing a recent Counterpoint Research study, Jain said the integration of AI in MediaTek\u2019s mid-range and premium chipsets helped the company capture a leading 52% share in 2024. <\/p>\n
Qualcomm, however, only had a 25% market share, as per the market tracking agency. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe consistently have had a huge market share. The reason is because of the incredible portfolio that we have. That is one big reason that we have been performing consistently well over the last several quarters,\u201d Jain said, adding that mainline retailers can drive greater awareness and uptake of AI by demonstrating the technology capabilities to consumers.<\/p>\n
\u201cOffline retail sales are increasing. So offline salespersons can explain to the end user. Offline is helping grow premiumisation and AI,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n
MediaTek considers entry-level smartphones priced below Rs 10,000 as an important market and said that it supports all Indian telecom operators\u2019 fifth-generation or 5G mobile networks. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe have the MediaTek Dimensity 6000 series for the entry-level smartphones, and we already have multiple smartphones in the market using our chipsets. We understand it is a very important market. We support all the operators, including SA (standalone) and NSA (non-standalone) networks,\u201d Jain said. <\/p>\n
ETTelecom in its February 7, 2025 edition reported that the sub-Rs 10,000 handset segment grew by volume in 2024 \u2013 after three years of decline \u2013 mainly fueled by the availability of affordable 4G and 5G handsets. <\/p>\n
Despite several challenges, analysts expect the sub-Rs 10,000 segment to grow this year, albeit in single digits, and contribute to the overall market volumes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
