Differentiated features of 5G, whether network slicing, low latency services or use cases like enterprise 5G and, private 5G networks etc, can only be realized if we are deploying a standalone core network,” Aayush Bhatnagar, senior vice president – Technology at Jio said at the recently concluded ETTelecom’s 5G Congress.

Bhatnagar revealed that the telco is in advanced stages of readiness for commercializing the 5G RAN and the 5G core network. “…we are fully self-sufficient and ready to go with both the 5G core network, the underlying cloud infrastructure as well as the 5G enabled or enhanced OSS and BSS systems, which will play a very critical role in monetizing 5G services,” he added.

Jio recently said that its development of in-house Massive MIMO and indoor 5G small cells is in advanced stages. Mukesh Ambani, chairman of RIL recently said that Jio was planning to launch 5G in the second half of 2021. The company is currently awaiting the telecom department’s nod to test its 5G equipment.

The executive said that Jio’s backhaul network is ready to take the workloads of 5G and its network will not require any major upgrade for the latest high-speed technology.

“Jio has been a fiber first company since the beginning. So, as far as the backhaul is concerned, the metro core network, the aggregate network, and also the long distance network, it is already ready to take the workloads of 5G and we do not foresee any major upgrades, which need to be done to support hundreds and millions of active 5G customers on the network,” Bhatnagar added.

Jio has also enabled the programmatic management of its optical transport and IP networks, which is live today even in its 4G network.

“…from a backhaul perspective, we are all green. Even from the perspective of the core and aggregate networks and the National long distance network capacity, we are all green.
