State-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) said on Thursday that its board has approved the sale of its property in Powai, Mumbai, to the Income Tax Department for \u20b9891.53 crore.<\/p>\n
The property which is located at Plot-C, Technology Street, Powai has a land area of 20,895.60 square metres, MTNL said in a regulatory filing.<\/p>\n
The sale will be carried out through a government-to-government (G2G) transfer or direct sale, the telco further said.<\/p>\n
The transaction is subject to formal acceptance by the I-T Department and is based on presidential approval and alternative mechanism (AM) approval, according to the filing. <\/p>\n
The decision is part of MTNL’s efforts to monetise non-core assets as the telecom operator continues to face financial challenges. <\/p>\n
The operations of the state-run telco is now being managed by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and is also likely to add more mobile towers by March 2027, ETTelecom reported in its September 23, 2026 edition. <\/p>\n
Delhi-headquartered telco has a combined base transceiver stations (BTS) strength of about 4,000. <\/p>\n
BSNL took over operational and network control of MTNL, which serves Delhi and Mumbai, under a 10-year service agreement effective January 1, 2025. <\/p>\n
Earlier, the government identified 100 MTNL properties\u2014including 48 in Delhi and 52 in Maharashtra\u2014for auction and monetisation to help the telco clear its financial liabilities. <\/p>\n
