Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a robust scope to create capabilities for cybersecurity defenders and acts as a catalyst to act faster during threat events, a top government official said on Monday. <\/p>\n
“AI itself has the scope of creating the capabilities for defenders to defend against the kind of attacks that can be created by malicious forces,” S Krishnan, secretary, Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY), said, adding that enterprises should use AI effectively in making sure that we act faster is something which becomes important. <\/p>\n
Krishnan was speaking at the launch of the “Digital Threat Report – 2025”, co-published by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), Computer Security Incident Response Team in Finance (CSIRT-Fin) and SISA. <\/p>\n
“It (report) highlights that awareness is the critical element that people are repeatedly reminded that they need to act on this. It is something where they cannot lose focus, and it is constant vigilance which is the underlying principle in cybersecurity,” he said. <\/p>\n
Further, Krishnan said that cybercrime is an enterprise-wide systemic risk against which the companies need to constantly guard. “We have to ensure that overall digital governance, including AI governance, accords due privacy to both cybersecurity and to operational resilience.”<\/p>\n
The study highlights rapid progression, demonstrating how the time between a threat’s emergence and its operational exploitation is shrinking, often from years to months or even weeks. <\/p>\n
“Defenders are using AI to identify weaknesses, prioritise remediation, and accelerate response, while adversaries are leveraging similar capabilities for reconnaissance, spear phishing, deep fakes, malware variation, credential abuse, exploit development, and chain attacks,” Sanjay Bahl, director-general, Cert-In, said. <\/p>\n
Futhermore, Bahl said that democratic access to advanced AI models expands innovation and enables smaller organisations to access sophisticated capabilities, but it can also lower the entry barrier for malicious actors and increase risks from shadow AI, weak access controls, insecure integration, and ungoverned model usage. <\/p>\n
The second edition of the report draws on extensive digital forensics and incident response (DFIR) research, analysis aligned with CERT-In and CSIRT-Fin observations, and research into adversarial AI. <\/p>\n
“As digital ecosystems become more interconnected, automated, and dependent on third-party platforms, the ability to anticipate threats, detect anomalies, respond effectively, and recover rapidly will be a critical indicator of cyber maturity and operational resilience. AI can be a major enabler when it is governed, tested, monitored, and integrated into resilient security operations,” Dharshan Shanthamurthy, founder & chief executive officer, SISA, said. <\/p>\n
“The distance between innovation and exploitation has narrowed dramatically, and that single shift changes everything about how our industry must defend itself,” Shanthamurthy added. <\/p>\n
