US congressional advisory body has issued a stark warning to America’s biggest artificial intelligence (AI) companies: China’s AI ecosystem is no longer just catching up and it is zooming ahead in ways that chip export restrictions alone cannot stop. According to a report by news agency Reuters, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission published a report on Monday (March 23) concluding that China’s dominance in open-source AI is generating a “self-reinforcing competitive advantage” which is allowing those companies to challenge US rivals despite being cut off from the world’s most advanced AI chips.
