Trai seeks more powers to stop telcos from dodging fines

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is seeking penal powers to enforce its regulations and take action against telecom operators if they fail to comply.

The regulator has written to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), seeking amendments to the Trai Act with special focus on penal provisions, and proposed a multi-fold increase in penalties, officials said.
