OpenAI looks to ‘Garlic’ to take on Google’s Gemini 3 AI model

OpenAI is reportedly working on a new high-performance AI model. The ChatGPT maker is developing a model codenamed “Garlic” to go head-to-head with Google’s dominant Gemini 3, according to a report from The Information. This new project is said to be a direct response to the success of Gemini 3, which quickly took the top spot on the LMArena AI leaderboard after its release. The competitive threat was enough for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to reportedly declare a “code red” internally, signaling an urgent push to improve ChatGPT and reestablish leadership.

It also claimed that OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen said Garlic has scored very well in internal tests when compared to Google’s Gemini 3 and Anthropic’s Opus 4.5.
