Govt’s AI framework may favour tech secretariat over a regulator

The upcoming governance framework on artificial intelligence may feature a “technical secretariat” to coordinate AI policies across government departments, connect stakeholders and establish common guidelines, people in the know of the matter told ET.

This is a departure from the earlier idea of having a regulator for the AI domain.

Many government bodies including the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) and the Niti Aayog had earlier pushed for setting up a statutory authority.
