ChatGPT-maker OpenAI’s rival to Nvidia’s AI chips may finally be ready this year

OpenAI is making progress in developing its first in-house artificial intelligence chip, according to Reuters. The company plans to finalize the chip design in the coming months and send it for fabrication to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), potentially reducing its reliance on Nvidia’s dominant chip technology.

Led by Richard Ho, a former Google chip design expert, OpenAI’s 40-person team is targeting mass production in 2026. The chip will utilize TSMC’s advanced 3-nanometer process technology and feature a systolic array architecture with high-bandwidth memory, similar to Nvidia’s current designs.
