Facebook and Instagram are reintroducing facial recognition technology to combat scams and impersonation attempts. Despite having “junked” the technology three years ago due to privacy concerns, Meta, the parent company of both platforms, claims this move is aimed at enhancing user security and control. The company shut down its facial recognition system and deleted face scan data from one billion users, citing “growing societal concerns” in 2021.
