‘Doc at top US hospital’: 75-year-old falls for fake profile, loses Rs 17 lakh

USING a fake social media profile of a “widower doctor working at a top hospital in the US”, cyber criminals swindled a 75-year-old woman in Pune of Rs 17 lakh. The victim made over 80 online transfers as she was told that the ‘doctor’ had been arrested at IGI Airport in Delhi and the money was required for his release.

An FIR has been registered at Chandan Nagar police station by the 75-year-old resident of Pune. A few months ago, she received a friend request on Facebook from a person who identified himself as a “doctor working for a top hospital in the US”.
