US government sues TikTok, alleges child privacy right violations

The US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance on Friday, accusing the popular social media platform of violating children’s privacy laws. The suit alleges TikTok illegally collected personal data from users under 13 without parental consent, breaching both the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and a 2019 agreement with the Federal Trade Commission.
