SC seeks Centre’s response to news publishers’ plea against data protection law
The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought the Centre’s response to a petition filed by the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) challenging provisions of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act and its accompanying rules, alleging that they infringe press freedom and the right to information.
“We will never pass an ex parte order without hearing the other side (Centre). You have to tell us how you will be regulating yourself,” said a three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by CJI Surya Kant, and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
