South Korean President says officials investigating possible use of AI in major bank hacking

South Korean authorities have launched an investigation into whether artificial intelligence (AI) systems played an active role in a wave of recent hacking incidents that compromised customer data across several major domestic banks. Speaking during a livestreamed cabinet meeting, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung disclosed that preliminary evidence points toward automated technology being deployed during the intrusions.

“Signs have emerged that AI models had been used in some of the cyberattacks, causing considerable public concern and anxiety,” said Lee who also directed his cabinet ministers to uncover the facts “swiftly and clearly” while mobilising specialised personnel and technical resources to contain the fallout.
