India weighs AI safety rules as experts push hybrid safeguards over US-style pact

India’s emerging AI rules face a fundamental choice: rely on industry-led safeguards, impose binding requirements on high-risk applications, or combine the two, as technology experts argue that a framework built for the country’s languages, scale and application-driven ecosystem cannot simply mirror the US approach.

The debate has gained urgency after US President Donald Trump and executives of leading technology companies signed a voluntary White House Accord on Super Intelligence on September 29.
